Conflicts
There are many conflicts throughout Undertow, but some are more notable than others. The main types of conflicts in this story are man vs. man and man vs. society. One of the man vs. man conflicts occurs between Fathom and his challengers. Fathoms father is The Prime. Those that oppose his father's views challenge Fathom to a fight because without a son, nobody will be able to bear the throne when The Prime dies. Fathom’s father is not a very popular leader, so he often fighting more than one Alpha member daily. All of these challenges are resolved through a fight to the death. Fathom has yet to lose and continues these challenges daily. Another man vs. man conflict is between Bex and her father. Bex’s father Russell is constantly abusing Bex and her mother. He has been doing it for quite some time now forcing Bex to leave her apartment and stay with Lyric for periods of time. Russell is sent to jail after every time he abuses one of the women, but he is always back in a few days. However, Lyric’s father Leonard is a police officer and has dogs sent over to their apartment to put him in jail for good when they find drugs. The last but most important conflict is man vs. society. The man in this situation is the Alpha, and the society is just majority of the people in the Zone. These people have formed a group known as the Niners. They riot everyday about the Alpha going to school. It lasts throughout the entire story, and it is never resolved because of the fight at the end of the book. I would say more, but I do not want to spoil the book any further.
